Understanding Pediatric Basic Life Support Algorithm

Pediatric BLS is a guide for medical professionals and caregivers to handle a baby during an emergency situation. This foundational guide will help you to perform each critical step with precision. Learn everything starting from assessing the patient to providing accurate chest-compressions.

Flowchart For PBLS Algorithm

Check the flow chart and maximize the chances of survival during such emergencies. This chart will help you to assess the situation and take the appropriate steps to save a child from such life-threatening conditions. Follow the steps to ensure patient survival rate is enhanced.

Step by step analysis of flowchart

  1. Assure Scene Safety
    • Check for other help
    • Activate the emergency respiratory system
    • Check responsiveness
    • One rescuer should remain with the child
  2. Understand the CPR Criteria
    • At least 100 compression per minute
    • Make sure the chest rises with the breath
    • Avoid over-ventilating
  3. Monitor Pulse
    • Check whether the pulse is felt within 10 seconds
    • If pulse is not felt, provide rescue breathing (1 breath every 2-3 seconds)
  4. Start CPR
    • If pulse is not felt after rescue breaths, start CPR immediately
    • First rescuer must perform 30 compressions and 2 breaths
    • Second rescuer must give 15 compressions and 2 breaths
    • Use AED as soon as the help arrives
  5. Check Rhythm – Shockable
    • Give one shock and resume CPR for 2 minutes
    • Check the rhythm
  6. Non-Shockable Rhythm
    • Continue with the CPR for 2 minutes
    • Check rhythm when the AED machine instructs
    • Continue unless ALS providers come or the child starts responding.

Highlights of Pediatric BLS Algorithm

  1. Asses the Scene
Ensure a safe and secure environment for the child. Quickly check the scene and make it appropriate for performing CPR.
  2. Emergency Activation
Activate the emergency respiratory system and call 911 for support. Search for Automated External Defibrillator (AED).
  3. Monitoring Pulse
Check for pulse and if it is not felt, go for rescue breathing with 1 breath every 2-3 seconds.
  4. Initiate CPR
Start with 30 compressions and 2 rescue breaths first. The second rescuer can give 15 chest compressions.
  5. Give Shock
You can give one shock and then continue with CPR for 2 minutes. In case, the  child is responsive, or the ALS providers arrive, you can finish.
