Adult Basic Life Support Algorithm

The Adult Basic Life Support Algorithm is a foundational guide for professionals and bystanders in cardiac and respiratory arrest scenarios. This structured approach ensures that each critical step, from assessing responsiveness to delivering high-quality chest compressions, is followed accurately to improve patient survival rates.

Understanding Adult BLS algorithm

The algorithm helps responders act quickly during a cardiac emergency. It teaches chest compressions, airway management, and rescue breaths. The algorithm is designed to streamline the actions needed to maintain circulation and breathing. Follow the steps to improve the chances of outcomes during life-threatening emergencies. The flowchart below will help in swift assessment, prompt intervention and systematic approach.

Flowchart For ABLS Algorithm

The algorithm is designed to streamline the actions needed to maintain circulation and breathing. The steps will help you improve the chances of positive outcomes during emergencies. The flowchart will help you make swift assessment and offer prompt support.

Step by step analysis of flowchart

  1. Scene Safety
    • Ensure safety of patient and responder
    • Check for responsiveness
  2. Activate Emergency Response
    • If alone, call 911
    • Get an AED (Automated External Defibrillator)
    • Request AED assistance
  3. Assess Breathing and Pulse
    • Check for breathing, approx 10 seconds
    • Check pulse by palpating carotid artery
    • If no pulse detected: Begin CPR
  4. Begin Chest Compression
    • Position hands in the center of the chest
    • Compression Depth: 2 inches/5 cm
    • Compression Frequency: 100-200 compressions/ min
    • Chest should fully recoil before next compression
  5. Provide Rescue Breaths
    • Use the head-tilt, chin-lift method to open airway
    • Give two breaths, each over one second
    • Repeat cycle of 30 compressions 2 rescue breaths
  6. Use AED On Priority
    • Follow the device prompts
  7. Place AED Pads
    • On upper right chest
    • Lower left side of the chest
  8. Allow AED to analyze
    • If indicated: Deliver Shock
  9. Resume CPR immediately
    • Resume CPR & Ddeliver Shock
    • Continue compressions
    • Repeat AED analysis every 2 mins

Highlights of Adult BLS Algorithm

  1. Assessment:
Quickly assess scene safety and check for patient responsiveness. Ensure a safe and effective intervention.
  2. Emergency Activation:
If unresponsive, call for emergency medical help and find an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) if available.
  3. Airway Management:
Open the airway using the head-tilt, chin-lift maneuver. Prepare to provide rescue breaths if needed.
  4. Cardiac and Breathing Assessment:
Check for normal breathing and pulse within 10 seconds. If neither is present, begin high-quality chest compressions immediately.
  5. Chest Compressions and Rescue Breathing:
Deliver chest compressions at a rate of 100–120 per minute. Depth should be of at least 2 inches, followed by rescue breaths.
  6. AED Use:
Apply the AED as soon as available. Follow prompts to analyze the heart rhythm and administer a shock if advised by the AED.
  7. Continuous CPR and Reassessment:
Resume CPR immediately after any shock or AED analysis. Continue until advanced help arrives or the patient shows signs of life. Reassess the patient every 2 minutes.
  8. Collaboration:
Coordinate with other responders or healthcare providers on-site. Maintain communication and support throughout the resuscitation efforts.
  9. Continuous Monitoring:
Constantly monitor and adjust actions based on the patient’s response to CPR and any changes in their condition.
